JALAN PETALING 茨厂街 (Petaling Street)

This is the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. Petaling Street is also called ‘Chee Cheong Kai’, meaning ‘Starch Factory Street’ in Cantonese, referring to its history as the centre for the production of tapioca flour.

Petaling Street is the best place to shop for counterfeit branded products and for trying out its large selection of local Chinese cuisine. The street is always crowded with tourists and locals. Accommodations can easily be found in and around Petaling Street, from the budget hostels to more up-market hotels.

Petaling Street is served by the Pasar Seni LRT station and the nearby Pudu Sentral express bus terminal.

BATU CAVES  பத்து மலை

The most popular Hindu shrine in Malaysia, the Batu Caves are dedicated to Lord Murugan. At the front of the caves stands an imposing 47 meter high golden statue in his honour. Since 1892, the Thaipusam festival has been celebrated there every year in late January or early February.

To reach the shrine, you must climb the 272 steps. The view inside the cavern is rewarding. The cave’s ceiling is 100 meters (320 feet) high and holes in the rock illuminate the massive cave below. The limestone cave is dotted with elaborate Hindu shrines and intricately painted sculptures of Hindu gods. Hundreds of friendly monkeys can be seen around the caves, always on the lookout for food offered by visitors.

Batu Caves is relatively easy to get to. You can catch the Batu Caves bound KTM Komuter train from KL Sentral station or any KTM stations in Klang Valley. The journey should take 30 minutes and costs RM2 (40p) one-way. Batu Caves is within walking distance from Batu Caves terminus station.
